Principal's Message

"Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, ... It is the Lord Christ you are serving"

Colossians 3:23-24 (NIV)

Imagine that everything we did was Christ centred. From doing the dishes for our spouse to letting the motorist get into the line of traffic. In some instances putting the other person first is quite simple and positive. The happy wave from the driver you let in certainly fills our ‘happy tank’ and doing the dishes and ironing gets me in the ‘good books’.

There are other times however when it is not so easy. When our children were younger there were ‘rules’ like when they had to go to bed, what they could eat, what they could watch and so on. I am not sure about your kids but while I was trying to serve the Lord there were times I was told how unfair I was. Sometimes we were the only parents on the planet that had a ‘bed time’, or a curfew, or expected vegetables to be eaten. Doing the right thing is not always easy.

Christ on the cross, doing His Father’s will. The ultimate example of ‘not easy’.

If Christ is why we are doing what we are doing, the ‘what we do’ will work out. Maybe too much time is spent on the when, where, what and how rather than ‘Who’.

By the way, the ‘who’ is HE and HE should be why.

Athletics Day

2019 Athletics day was another great inter-house event. All students showed up on the day ready to give it their all. After the morning field events and then the afternoon track events the points were counted. Tyndale took out the competition followed by Wesley in second and Luther in third place.
Congratulations to our age group Champions who are acknowledged for their results gaining the highest number of placings. Junior School, Y7&8

It is hard to believe that we are almost at the end of term one already. One of our students commented this morning that this felt like this term was a short term. I had to do a little giggle. Some of our students (and staff) are looking a little tired and feeling a little weary!

Christian Schools Sports Day

On Friday all of the year 7&8’s headed to Cornerstone for a sports day. This day is always a good one. The students mix and mingle with students from other Christian schools from around the lower North Island and spend the day playing lacrosse, turbo touch, volleyball, basketball, netball and football. For some, this is a real challenge as they might be in a group with no one else from LAC. Mrs Ngarepa and I were very proud of LAC’s participation and sportsmanship on the day.

Y7&8 Camp Report and Photos

Y10 Parliament Trip

"Arriving at school around 7 am which was a little earlier than usual, we loaded onto a hired bus and headed off to Wellington. Our day consisted of going to the Police Museum, the National Library and last but not least going to Parliament. At the Police Museum, we learnt how to take fingerprints for potential evidence at crime scenes and learnt about different events in our country's history. While at the National Library we viewed important documents such as the Treaty of Waitangi and the Women's Suffrage Petition.

On our way into Parliament, we walked through a metal detector to check for any possible threats to anyone inside. During our time in Parliament, we received a tour and a very thoughtful lesson about Parliament itself and the parties within. We learnt about the different roles people played in Parliament and which areas those people worked in. We also had the chance of meeting the MP for the Rangitikei.

During our tour, we watched the debate in the Debating Chamber. We were there for question time and saw someone being asked to apologize for not following the rules and saying something false when they were asked a question. On our way out we scanned a sticker we had earlier received to show we were with a school which would allow the gates to open for us. We finally arrived back at school at six after a long tiring 11 hour day as our parents awaited our arrival."

World Vision Fundraising Team

This year the World Vision Fundraising Team consists of seven students. Rachel Jaboon (Chairman), Lexi Rutherford (Deputy Chairman), Lydia Pavarno (Secretary), Samarah Ward (Assistant Secretary), Emmanuel Madembo (Treasurer), Ashah Meehan (Assistant Treasurer) and Shane Smith (Ideas Person).

Last year LAC raised about $3,600 for South Sudan. The team this year has set a goal of $4 000. The focus will be South Sudan for a second year running since the refugee crisis on the border between South Sudan and Uganda is so severe. A million refugees need assistance, many of them children. Music Department News

YEAR 11 MINI CONCERT

In order to prepare for their NCEA Solo Performance credits, the Year 11 Music class performed in front of their friends and teachers during lunchtime on Friday 5 April 2019. The performances pushed the students to practice intentionally and to build their confidence when performing to an audience. Students had a great time and are looking forward to their next performance on Monday 24 June.

YEAR 12/13 MINI CONCERT

The Senior Music Class had their own concert on Tuesday 9 April 2019. The concert was well supported by friends and staff, giving students the opportunity to experience the emotions that accompany performance on stage. Their next Mini Concert will be on Tues 25 June.

BIG SING CHOIR

Forty students are preparing to attend the Big Sing 2019. The choir is student directed. Rachel Jaboon (Head Girl) and Beaven Ganaii (Head Boy) are leading the group who plan to sing on Thursday June 13.
Tickets are available at the Regent on Broadway.

Ugly Shakespeare Company Visit

The Ugly Shakespeare Company came to LAC and performed Shakespeare's "The Taming of the Shrew" on Monday 25th April. Years 11-13 attended the performance. The company bucked tradition by performing with an all-female cast, playing all of the characters (including the male roles). Their modern interpretation of a play in which the ideal woman is submissive certainly got some controversy going.

One student described it the following way:

"Amazing! That is the only way to describe the performance by the Ugly Shakespeare Company. I was particularly impressed by their ability to not only perform the play in a way that was understandable but to also convey the deeper meanings and implications in the play. It was my first time watching this play, but I felt like I could truly understand all that was going on, and compare it to reality now. It suited all sorts of tastes because it involved comedy, romance and tragedy, which made it all the more realistic. I would definitely recommend this company to others, especially for an age group of 13+ who would understand, and be able to draw out life lessons, from this play." Rachel Jaboon, Y13

Be A Kid Week

Sometimes we struggle to pinpoint what it is we are good at, or what our strengths are, so in the Careers Department, we decided to go back to basics.

When we play we are naturally drawn to certain things. We are all differently wired and that is what we highlighted in 'Be a Kid Week'. Our inner 'kid' is our inner 'strength' that never leaves us even in our adult careers.
