What Sport Gets You Going?
According to our latest sports participation statistics for the NZSSSC, LAC boys are at 70% participation, with girls at 60%. Our overall Term 1 participation rate by all students is at 64%. Overall this is good, and LAC students are always keen to give the sport a go, but girls clearly have some catching up to do in Term 2!

TRYathlon Participants
Weet-Bix TRYathlon

On Tuesday, 20 March 2018, our LAC Team participated in the Weet-Bix TRYathlon from 8am to 12.30pm at Ongley Park in Palmerston North. Organisers created a safe environment where students could focus on enjoying time with friends on the course or in activities around the TRYathlon Village. TRYathletes received a kit stuffed full of goodies from Weet-Bix and their sponsors, plus a free breakfast was enjoyed by all.

Events included three stages, namely a swim at the Lido, a cycle and a run through the Esplanade and Ongley Park. Our keen athletes who participated this year were: Angelina Cariga, Kaitlyn Taunton, Matt Mata, Brianna Larsen, Lexi Rutherford, Lydia Pavarno, Samara Ward, Eva Ruiz and Matthew Bishop. Our team coach, Miss Leach, together with parent supporters, were on hand to encourage our participants, who all completed the three legs of the race to receive their medals at the finish line.  Hopefully their enthusiasm for the event this year will encourage an even larger number of LAC students to enter in 2019. See you next year at Ongley Park!

Lawn Bowls remain a favourite!
After volleyball with the participation of 35 students, lawn bowls on a Tuesday afternoon is still a favourite with 31! Touch was a distant 3rd.

Every Tuesday students lined up for the bus to go to “BBQ and Bowls” at the Northern Bowling Club. Here they learnt essential bowling skills from Paul Darbyshire and his team of volunteers – and all had some fun in the sun. They also participated in secondary school team games and competitions with other school students. However, the highlight for all was the weekly BBQ sponsored by Sport Manawatu!
Senior Boys' Volleyball
"The boys' volleyball season was a time of development. With many of our senior players leaving, it was the turn of the younger boys to step into the spotlight. The potential has been evident all season long, and as it came to a close, the team grew from strength to strength. We look forward to seeing these boys develop into very strong players for next season."

Badminton - Terms 1 & 2

Thursday lunchtime has proven to be very popular with ball sports. In Term 1 we have three Thursday lunchtime sports, namely Tennis with Mrs Aiono, Table Tennis with Matthew Ball from Table Tennis Manawatu in the cafeteria, and Shuttle Time Badminton in the gym with the coach and former student, Joshua Curry from Badminton Manawatu.

Shuttle Time is the Badminton World Federation’s Schools/Clubs Badminton Programme launched in 2012.  Shuttle Time has been incredibly well received right around the world, currently implemented in over 100 nations across all continental confederations.

The Shuttle Time Programme is designed for children:

· Of all ages and abilities to be successful in developing badminton skills

· To learn basic badminton skills through the activities in the lessons and

· To develop physical skills while learning badminton through the activities in Shuttle Time

The second component of the Shuttle Time programme is based around educating and developing more adults to deliver it in a school/club or association setting. In Term 2 Josh will also be offering a special professional development session to LAC teachers.

Our students have enjoyed participating and learning new skills, and we have also had renewed interest from students to participate in the secondary school competitions run by Badminton Manawatu at the Arena. Our Term 2 coach and experienced team manager is Mrs Henry. A team consists of four students, and playtime normally runs on a Monday from 3.30pm – 5.30pm.  Secondary students can still register their interest to play: sport@lac.school.nz

Volleyball Nationals Report

The 2018 Secondary Schools' Volleyball Championships were again held here in Palmerston North at Arena Manawatu and Massey University from Sunday 18 to Friday 23 March.  Our senior girls' team was one of the 171 teams that competed in this week-long tournament.

Prior to the tournament, our first goal was to qualify in the top two for Manawatu to ensure we would at least be competing in Division 3 or 4.  This would already be an improvement on last year where we competed in Division 5.  A win in our tightly fought qualifying match against PNGHS ticked off our first goal.  During the opening ceremony on the Sunday evening, all the local schools were asked to support Wiremu Te Awe Awe's welcome with a waiata - however, none of the other schools wanted to.  Without shame or second thought, our team of 8 girls stood up in front of over 2,000 people, all by themselves, and sung 'Ehara i te mea' beautifully.  It was a very proud moment.

The first day and a half of the tournament consisted of three grading games that would either see us playing the rest of the week in Division 3 or Division 4.  We needed to win at least two of those three games to make Division 3.  Our first game didn't start the best going two sets down in a best of 5 games.  However, with scrappy determination and moments of absolute brilliance, we managed to claw our way back to win 3-2.  Our evening game saw us a lot closer to our potential and we took that one 3-0.  Our third grading game was a lot harder and we went down 3-0.  But the two wins were enough to take us into Division 3 which was another goal achieved.

Unfortunately, the rest of the week was full of hard games against good teams and while we took sets, we weren't able to notch up any more wins.  However, another goal was to come away with more experience and knowledge of the game and the tournament than we took in, and I know every team member - player, coach, assistant coaches, our team mums and manager - can confidently say we achieved that goal.  As always, it was a tiring week of highs and lows.  I am fortunate to be blessed with a team of 8 girls who are all fun to be around and have beautiful personalities, so despite the lows and late nights, it was a great week.

In addition to our senior girls' team, our school played a role in the tournament as well.  Tamatea High School from Napier had a boys' team competing in the tournament and thanks to their connection with Mr Van (his old school) they stayed the week in our boys' dormitory.  Also, because Massey University gym was not available in the evenings, our school gym was chosen as one of the venues for the scheduled Massey University afternoon/evening games.  We hosted eight games for the Division 5 Girls over the first three days of the tournament, in our newly refurbished gym.

Thank you on behalf of the girls to our parents, coaches and team mums, the LAC staff and LAC House staff, everyone who has contributed to our endless fundraising, and all the people who supported us at games.  I look forward to doing this all again next year.  As it will be the last year for the majority of our senior girls' team, it'll be a big one - best we start our training now, girls!

Horse of the Year - Hastings

"Jessica Horne qualified to compete at Horse of the Year in Hastings this year. Jess entered into the discipline Dressage. She was riding against some of NZ's top riders and learnt a lot from the experience. Jessica went to Horse of the Year as a spectator in 2017 and set the goal that she would come back as a competitor in 2018. It is great seeing students achieve their goals within their extracurricular sports. Well done Jess, next goal is to qualify for 2019!"
